Sponsored by the Outreach Team at Birmingham University, a team building activity was required to enable a group of prospective under graduates from non-typical backgrounds to quickly feel welcome and bonded with their fellow course mates.

Required Specifications:

Client:          Birmingham University

Location:      The Great Hall, Birmingham University Campus

Numbers:     250 in 25 teams

Duration:      3 hours

Purpose:

Sponsored by the Outreach Team at Birmingham University, a team building activity was required to enable a group of prospective under graduates from non-typical backgrounds to quickly feel welcome and bonded with their fellow course mates.

Tailoring:

Following an initial consultation with the client we identified that the activity needed to be:

  • Suitable for 250 people all together in the University’s beautiful Great Hall
  • Inclusive, quickly accessible and mindful of the broad spectrum of cultural and economic backgrounds present on the event
  • Lightly competitive without being to rigorous to enable to the students to network and forge connections with one another

We decided on our Indoor Team Challenge with Crystal Maze Finale as a suitable format to meet the brief.

Because EML Team delivers a lot of Graduate intake programmes for Corporate clients Birmingham University felt that the EML Team lead presenter contextualising the session around ‘how relevant these exercises would be for later on in their journey’ would also really add value.

Delivery:

We arrived several hours prior to meet the Client and get set up, by the time we were finished the Great Hall looked great and our team was in position and ready to go.

The Client worried on the day that her pre prepared team sheets were no longer valid due to a lot of unforeseen last-minute changes in Student attendees. Our Event Team were able to improvise and quickly allocate the 250 strong group into 25 teams without impairing the pre agreed event timings.

The team building activity was delivered flawlessly, adhering to pre agreed timings throughout and the hilarious Crystal Maze Finale (shown in the video below) with 5 minutes to spare.

Outcome:

The Outreach Programme Leads were delighted with the outcomes of the session.

“The engagement levels of the Students was superb throughout. It was so refreshing to have such a professional team, who clearly knew what they were doing, run this for us an allow us to observe and enjoy it as opposed to trying do this all ourselves”
